Soft Gel is one of our most-requested extension services — here's what actually happens during the appointment, and how to keep it looking good.
What is Soft Gel, exactly?
It's a lightweight, flexible gel extension applied directly over your natural nail using a gel tip or gel-over-form technique, then cured under a UV/LED lamp. Compared to acrylic (a liquid-and-powder system that hardens into a rigid shell), Soft Gel stays more flexible, which is gentler on the natural nail bed and more comfortable for clients who find acrylic too stiff.
What happens during the appointment?
1. Prep — natural nails are shaped, cuticles cleaned, and the surface lightly buffed so the gel adheres properly
2. Extension application — gel is applied over a tip or form to build the desired length and shape
3. Curing — each layer is cured under a UV/LED lamp before the next is added
4. Shaping and finish — the extension is filed to final shape, then topped with color or a clear finish
The full process runs about 75 minutes — longer than a standard manicure because of the multiple cure cycles.
How long does it actually last?
The extension itself doesn't "wear off" the way polish does — it grows out with your natural nail. Most clients need a fill or fresh set every 2-3 weeks as the gap between the cuticle and the extension base becomes visible. Left much longer than that, the extension can start to feel unbalanced or catch on things as the natural nail underneath grows forward.
How is it removed safely?
Never peel or pick a Soft Gel extension off — that takes layers of the natural nail with it and can leave nails thin and weak for months. A proper [Soft Gel Removal](/services/soft-gel-removal) files down the top layer, then soaks the gel off with the extension structure intact, protecting the nail bed underneath. It runs about 25 minutes.
Can I add nail art to Soft Gel?
Yes — [Soft Gel with Art](/services/soft-gel-art) is the same extension service with hand-painted or applied nail art finished on top, and runs about 90 minutes to allow time for both steps.
How does this compare to a regular Gel Manicure?
If you don't want added length — just color and shine on your natural nail — a [Gel Manicure](/services/gel-manicure) is the simpler, lower-maintenance option. See the [full nail-service comparison](/tips/gel-manicure-vs-soft-gel-vs-ombre-nails) if you're deciding between the two.
