How Long Does Hair Rebonding Really Last? Aftercare Tips to Extend Rebond Xtenso Results

Rebond Xtenso is permanent in the sense that it doesn't wash out — but how it looks 6 months in depends heavily on aftercare.

Rebond Xtenso is permanent in the sense that the straightened sections never revert to curly — but "permanent" doesn't mean "maintenance-free." Here's what actually determines how good it looks 6 months later.

How long does the straight result actually last?

The treated hair stays straight indefinitely — it doesn't grow back curly, only new root growth does. What fades over time isn't straightness but shine and smoothness, typically starting to look duller or slightly frizzy at the ends again around the 4-6 month mark if aftercare is skipped, mainly due to accumulated heat-styling and sun/humidity exposure on hair that's already been through one major chemical process.

What's the single biggest factor in how it holds up?

Moisture. Rebonded hair has been through a strong chemical process, which makes it more porous and more prone to dryness than untreated hair. Dry, under-conditioned rebonded hair looks frizzy and dull far faster than well-moisturized rebonded hair, even though both are equally "straight" at the bond level.

Aftercare that actually extends the result

  • Book a Hair Spa or Repair Treatment every 3-4 weeks — rebonded hair needs deeper conditioning than untreated hair, not just a regular wash-day conditioner
  • Wait at least 2 weeks before coloring — stacking a color service too soon after rebonding compounds the chemical load on the same strands
  • Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase — cotton pulls moisture out of hair overnight and creates friction that roughens the cuticle
  • Skip daily heat styling — rebonded hair is already straight; reaching for a flat iron on top of it just adds unnecessary heat damage
  • Use sulfate-free shampoo — sulfates strip the same oils that rebonded hair is already short on

When should I consider a touch-up?

Not the whole head — only new root growth needs rebonding again, typically at the 6-9 month mark depending on how fast your hair grows. Bringing already-straightened lengths through a second full chemical process unnecessarily is exactly what causes over-processing damage, so a proper touch-up should only target the new growth line.
